It’s the question I get asked the most: “Saona or Catalina?”. Both include hotel pickup, both are full-day trips and both are worth it. What changes is the kind of day you want to have.
Saona Island: more beach and more activity
We leave from Bayahíbe by catamaran or speedboat and the day lasts about 10 hours. We stop at the Natural Pool, a sandbank in the middle of the sea with waist-deep water, and then spend time on the island, with a buffet lunch by the sea and drinks included. It’s the classic plan: white sand, palm trees and photos.
If you want a calmer version, with a small group and four stops on the island, there’s the VIP Saona Island Excursion: 4 Beaches by speedboat.
Catalina Island: more snorkeling and more calm
Catalina departs from La Romana, with a crossing of about an hour by catamaran and a day of around 9 hours. It’s a smaller, quieter island, and the best part is the snorkeling: its reefs are protected and it’s common to see colorful fish. There’s a buffet lunch on the island and national drinks are included.
