Tour Description

Catalina Island is one of those places people overlook because Saona gets all the fame, and honestly that’s a mistake. It’s the second most important island in the Dominican Republic, practically uninhabited and under natural park protection, so what you’ll see there is pure Caribbean, with no buildings or background noise. Here’s how the day goes with Punta Cana in Travel.

Aerial view or view from the sea of Catalina Island: white-sand coast surrounded by vegetation and turquoise water, no buildings visible.

Heading to La Romana

We depart from La Romana, and we normally sail by catamaran (sometimes the way out or the way back is by speedboat, depending on the group that day). The crossing takes about an hour, with music and a good atmosphere from the moment you step aboard.

Person snorkeling underwater over a coral reef, colorful tropical fish visible.

Snorkeling on the way

Before reaching the island we stop to snorkel. Catalina Island is known precisely for that: its reefs are quite well preserved thanks to the park’s protection, so it’s common to see colorful fish and coral formations without going far from the boat. Snorkel gear is included, you don’t have to bring anything extra.

Lounge chairs under palm trees on the beach at Catalina Island, white sand, turquoise sea, relaxed atmosphere.

Arriving at the island

We arrive around noon, and the first thing waiting for you is a welcome drink, which can be sangria, cold beer or simply water if you prefer something lighter. From then on you have two to three and a half hours completely free to do whatever you like: stay on a lounge chair doing nothing, get back in the water, walk along the sand or just take a nap under a palm tree. Nobody rushes you here.

Welcome drink (sangria or cold beer) on a table with a view of the sea at Catalina Island.

Food and drinks

Lunch is a buffet, served right there on the island, and national drinks flow freely both on board and on land. This isn’t a “one drink and that’s it” tour, you can have seconds as many times as you like.

Did you know…?

  • Catalina Island covers 9.6 km² and is the country’s second most important island, after Saona.
  • Because it’s a protected natural park, nothing may be built there, which is why it stays so well preserved.
  • Its waters belong to the Caribbean Sea, unlike the Atlantic that washes the Punta Cana coast, and you can tell by how calm and clear the water looks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to swim to snorkel? expand_more

It's not required, we have life jackets and the guide is always close to the group. But if open sea makes you a bit nervous, tell the guide before getting in the water.

Is Catalina Island better than Saona Island? expand_more

They're different experiences. Catalina is smaller, quieter and has better snorkeling; Saona has longer beaches and more activity. If you already know Saona, Catalina is the next one.
